Preparations for rabbits: list, instructions for use

Rabbits are shy and prone to stress. Therefore, a novice rabbit grower should consult with a veterinarian: how to give pills, bury solutions and apply ointment.

Prepare a place before the treatment procedure. If the rabbit is calm, it can be carried out on the table or on the floor. But all sharp and breakable objects that can give splinters must still be removed. If the rabbit behaves restlessly, it should be swaddled, but not very tight (for example, wrap in a towel).

There are several ways to take pills:

  • some rabbits take a pill from the palm and swallow themselves,
  • does not take - hide the tablet in a piece of your favorite food,
  • or crush the pill and mix with dry food,
  • still does not swallow - dissolve the tablet in water and try to drink,
  • It does not work - type the solution into the syringe (only without a needle!) and inject a little through the corner of the mouth.

Eye drops and ointments are more convenient to apply on the floor. Ointment should not fall on the eyeball. After completing the procedure, cover the eyelid and gently massage it. Bury the drops in the ear gently and close to the ear opening, then massage the ear.

And no amateur! Something you do not know - consult with a veterinarian. Otherwise, it can harm the rabbit, even to death.

What should be in the first aid kit rabbit

Each experienced rabbit breeder has a first aid kit located next to a flock of animals. In addition to the fact that there are medicines and essential medicines, you need to take care of the availability of disinfectants and materials for dressings.

  • iodine solution no more than 5% or brilliant green,
  • boric alcohol,
  • Ichthyol-based ointment
  • streptocid
  • glucose, saline,
  • a variety of antibiotics
  • vaccines against the most dangerous diseases of rabbits.

What disinfectants should be in the first aid kit? There must be several products that are used for disinfection. Most often, this group includes ASD, creolin or bleaching powder. In addition, you can buy classic formalin or caustic soda.

Rabbits are often injured, so you need to have in the first-aid kit all the tools you need for treating wounds and treating them. The list should contain sterile bandages and cotton wool, napkins, gauze, syringes. It will not be superfluous to include in the list a medical scalpel, tweezers, a pipette, beakers for weighing drugs, and so on.

Preparation for treatment

Do not forget that the rabbits do not tolerate stress, because of the nervous shock they can aggravate the disease, leading to death. Home treatment is a big stress for a pet, it needs to be taken into account before you take the rabbit with medication or start a course of injections.

Before proceeding to direct treatment, you need to properly prepare and rabbit, and his place. It is important to choose a time when a fluffy will be calm and full: in this state he is most calm. You should also make sure that there are no objects about which you can get hurt. If the animal behaves restlessly, it makes sense not to roll the rabbit, for this an ordinary towel or a piece of cloth will fit.

Preparation of the rabbit for treatment

If the treatment involves taking pills, they can be given in several ways:

  • Feed your pet a pill from your hand.
  • Hide the pill in a treat.
  • Crush the pill and pour it into the feed.
  • Dissolve the drug can be in water, if not prohibited by the instructions.
  • Inject the drug through a syringe without a needle.
  • If the drug for treating a rabbit is available in the form of drops or ointment, all manipulations should be carried out on the floor: thus it is easier to immobilize the rabbit. It is important to act strictly according to the instructions and not to self-medicate, since it can be completely sad.

This active ingredient is in such preparations as Baytril for rabbits, Baykoks (or its cheaper analogue of Turokox), Enroks and so on. This group of antibiotics is prescribed by veterinarians most often. Its popularity is due to the fact that the drug has a wide spectrum of action, is used to treat infections of the respiratory system, diseases of the urogenital area (for example, with kidney stones) and in the complex therapy of wounds and injuries. The course of treatment with Baytril usually lasts about 5-8 days, unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor. As for the restrictions, it is not recommended to treat the young growth with Baytril, as this may adversely affect the structure of the backbone.

Bicillin or benzylpenicillin

This drug also belongs to antibiotics, the active ingredient is penicillin. Its advantage is that it is the only drug of the penicillin group, which is normally tolerated by small rodents. Benzylpenicillin can be used for the treatment of acute conditions, as well as to relieve chronic symptoms. These include chronic rhinitis, ear diseases, and respiratory-related illnesses. The disadvantage is that the course of treatment usually lasts about 30 days.

Antibiotics for treating rabbits

Recently, the frequency of his appointment has decreased significantly, as new antibiotics of a new generation appear. However, in the treatment of pasterellosis, Oxytetracycline is practically indispensable, because it acts as effectively as Enrofloxacin, Enroflon and Enromag. The drug releases in the form of ampoules with liquid, which is injected into rabbits intramuscularly.

Tetramizole, Zinaprim antibiotics have also proven themselves well. Moreover, Zinaprim is the most successful, since it contains 2 active ingredients at once - sulfadimidine and trimethoprim, which makes Zinaprim a powerful agent against infection.

Group of prohibited antibiotics

Here is a list of antibiotics that can never be used to treat rabbits:

  • Lincomycin,
  • Ampicillin
  • Tylosin,
  • Tromexin,
  • Clindamycin,
  • Erythromycin.

In addition to the fact that these drugs can cause severe poisoning after ingestion, there is a risk that the rabbit will die from toxic shock.

We have listed not the commercial names, but the actual components. In order to save the life of a rabbit, you must carefully read the chemical composition of each medication, before giving it to the rabbit.

This tool can be purchased in several versions: ready-made solution, liquid concentrate, gel or cream. Chlorhexidine treated wounds and cuts, as well as injuries with open fractures or in the postoperative period. In addition, having achieved the desired concentration, it is possible to irrigate the oral cavity of the rabbit with the help of a chlorhexidine solution.

Alcohol tinctures and solutions, classic Zelenka and iodine

Veterinarians do not recommend the use of the above remedies for the treatment of rabbits, as with improper dosage there is a likelihood of burns. However, as a means of first aid, the drugs can still be used by first making an aqueous solution based on them, or Iodinol is ready to buy.

Painkillers, or analgesics, are used when the rabbit is in pain. These can be, for example, fractures, postoperative time, acute toothache, intestinal colic, increased gas formation, and so on. Veterinarians prefer analgesics, which belong to the group of nonsteroidal. The fact is that their side effects are not so extensive, basically only the gastrointestinal tract suffers, especially often if the treatment has been delayed.

What drugs can be used to relieve pain:

  • Ketoprofen (Ketonal), Ketanov,
  • Rimadyl or Carptofen,
  • Meloxicam.

Separately, it must be said about the drugs that are used by a person to get rid of pain. These are classic medicines: No-shpa, Analgin, Ibuprofen, Ledocaine and Baralgin. Veterinarians prohibit their use in treatment, but a single dose is still allowed if nothing else is at hand.

Medicines against coccidiosis

Coccidiosis is a dangerous rabbit disease that is fatal in more than half of the cases. They successfully fight coccidia, the causative agents of the disease, such as Eymeterm, Baytril, Amprolium, Tolukoks, Baykoks, Toltrazuril and others.

The dosage and course of treatment with Aymeterm and other medicines should be selected depending on the age of the sick rabbit, as well as on how much the animal weighs. Veterinarians recommend that in self-treatment, to act strictly in accordance with the instructions, not to increase or decrease the dose, also not to prolong the treatment and not to shorten it.

Separately, we say about such a medicine as Trisulfon. It is used as the main therapy against coccidiosis (eymerioz), as well as the treatment of diseases caused by parasites.

Medicines against coccidiosis

We list all medicines that may be useful in the treatment of coccidiosis:

  • Diclazuril,
  • Torukoks and Tolukoks,
  • Amprolium,
  • Eymeterm,
  • Biseptol,
  • Phthalazole,
  • Trichopol.

Usually the course of treatment lasts about 5-7 days, after which a pause is made, and then the course is repeated once more.

Drugs against worms

All drugs for getting rid of worms contain fenbendazole, praziquatel or pyrantel in their composition, this is necessarily indicated in the instructions. If you list the commercial names, it is Profender, Shustrik, Pirantel, Panakur, Dirovin and Febtal.

When choosing a treatment for worms for a rabbit, you should pay attention to Albendazole. On the territory of Russia, you can find a lot of positive reviews that it was possible to rid the rabbit of worms in the shortest possible time. However, the experience of Western colleagues veterinarians suggests that Albendazole can not be called safe due to high toxicity.

Used to treat parasitic lesions of rodents, destroys fleas, lice, as well as their eggs and larvae. The drug is intended for external use only.

It differs in that after its use the animal receives long-lasting protection against fleas, lice, ticks, as well as lashes. Its duration is up to thirty days. The lawyer is applied by analogy with Advantage outwardly by squeezing the contents of the bottle into the withers of the crawl.

Another analogue of Advocaat and Advageage, is also used only externally. Protects against parasites for a period of one month.

Ivermek should be used as an intramuscular injection. It has a detrimental effect not only on external parasites, but also on those that have settled in the digestive tract (helminths) or other internal organs. Dirofen has the same effect.

Also used against parasites are Otodectin, Amitrazine (for scabies), Lozeval (for fungi), Amprolium, and so on.

In no case can not use drugs that include fipronil. First of all, we are talking about preparations Bars and Front Line. Their side effects for the rabbit can be fatal, it is better to give preference to proven and effective drugs, such as Amprolium.

Treatment of diseases of the digestive tract

Rabbits often have digestive problems. The reason for this may be banal indigestion, poisoning, or a sharp transition from one food to another. What medications can help fluff?

The action of the drug is designed to restore the normal operation of all intestinal sections. It is often used for peristalsis after anesthesia or gastrostasis. It is not recommended for self-use at home, if the rabbit is diagnosed with gastric blockage due to ingestion of a foreign body or bezoar.

In addition, No-shpa, Meloxicam, Simethicone (found in Espumisan, Simplex drops, Timpanol may be useful). Conventional vaseline oil (will contribute to the fact that foreign bodies leave the body of the rabbit naturally), Loperamide (an effective antidiarrheal agent), Sulfasalazine (anti-inflammatory effect on the gastrointestinal mucosa).

Enterosorbent Group

Enterosorbents are needed in order to speed up the evacuation of toxins secreted by bacteria, that is, to reduce the manifestation of intoxication. Often accompany the complex treatment of diseases of the intestinal group. It is worth remembering that all enterosorbents should be given strictly before (2-3 hours) or after a meal (also after 2-3 hours).

Rabbit Stimulants

Rabbits need constant maintenance of immunity, which increases the body's resistance to external pathogens and diseases. For example, in veterinary medicine Fosprenil is often used, which increases the resistance of a rabbit to infections and viruses. The fact is that in its composition there is selenium, which has a beneficial effect on the immune system and on the general state of health of fluffy in general. With the same purpose, rodents are given vitamin complexes, strictly observing the dosage specified in the abstract. Gammatonic and Nucleopeptide, which, in addition to vitamins, contains a lot of mineral substances, are considered successful drugs.

If you want to use your personal first-aid kit less often, get a first-aid kit for rabbits.

Today, even beginner breeders know that without proper attention to the health of their pets, the “golden mountains” can quickly turn into a pile of unnecessary cells. If large farms and nurseries have full-time veterinarians and even services, then medium and small farmers need to comprehend the basics of veterinary medicine and apply knowledge in practice independently. Today we will make another contribution to the preservation of the welfare of rabbits, namely, we will reduce the risks associated with delaying the start of therapeutic measures. After all, sometimes it is simply not possible to urgently go to the vet and even visit the pharmacy. A great help in treating our pets is the availability of a special rabbit kit. In some cases, it helps to save individual individuals and even all livestock, since the success of the whole business depends on the speed of decision making and the start of procedures. After removing the threat and creating a groundwork for successful treatment, you can then move to a doctor or a veterinary pharmacy. Many rabbit breeders who have the necessary supply of medicines successfully cope with many rabbit sores themselves.

Remember that many diseases of rabbits are developing rapidly and every lost hour can turn into an extraordinary event on your farm. Collect at least a small first-aid kit to treat the most dangerous and insidious diseases, accidents and injuries. Start by purchasing a non-consumable part. I mean the tools and accessories that will be needed for the successful treatment of many ailments. They have to be replenished rarely, only in the event of a breakdown. What applies to them? I suggest to glance in my virtual first-aid kit.

In this article I will focus on the option of maximally filling it, and you decide what size the container should be cooked. Or it will be a small box, or a box.

It is very important to keep in mind the shelf life of drugs, their storage conditions. So many solutions, tinctures, gels and ointments should be at low temperatures, that is, in the refrigerator. Vaccines for future purchase should not be, their shelf life is limited. It is better to buy fresh. Yes, and they can not help. Sick rabbits cannot be vaccinated, you can only finish off unfortunate patients.

When buying medicines for the first-aid kit, try to choose those that have been produced recently and have the largest temporary storage reserve. Packaging must be carefully checked for integrity, sealing of liquids for tightness. It will not be superfluous to check the manufacturer’s certificate For expensive drugs, it is advisable to find detailed information and reviews on the Internet, so as not to throw money away. In hot weather, use a mini-fridge or overlay the drug packs with ice cream.

Often, pharmacists offer to buy the drug you have not requested, but its analogue or substitute. It is necessary to follow such advice with caution, since in an emergency situation there should be no right to mistake. In the first-aid kit there should be only the preparations checked and tested in practice by you. There are not as many as they might seem. They are all known and tested more than once; most rabbit breeders will call them without thinking.

As you already understood from the pictures, there are two types of syringes used by rabbit breeders. The first is the usual, disposable, with a volume of from 2 to 10 cubes. Why are you so big, you ask, because the rabbit is not a man, he does not need large doses of drugs? The fact is that during mass vaccination or treatment of a group of rabbits, we will save time if we supply several heads with one dressing. The only condition is to change the needles for animals from different cells in the case of preventive measures, in order not to accidentally spread possible germs.

But there are drugs, a single dose of 0.1 cubic and even less. An ordinary syringe can not do here, we need insulin. It is better if it is reusable with a replaceable needle. Its total volume is 1 ml, which means that much smaller doses can be measured. Depending on the scale step, the possibilities differ and reach the hundredth part of a milliliter. But in the overwhelming majority of cases it will be enough for us to measure 0.1 ml and therefore the required accuracy will be easy to sustain, even if there are only 10 divisions.

Dressings - cotton wool, bandages and napkins are used to treat wounds, hematomas, and surgery by a veterinarian at home. Of course, he has his own set for departure to the patient, but his stock never hurts.

Many rabbit breeders have the skills of castrating males, and those who do not have, also resort to the services of doctors. In any case, you need a special silk thread to pull the seed channel. All the above materials, of course, must be sterile.

Impregnated with ointment gauze wipes impose on the wound before the onset of its complete cleansing of pus. Also wipes may be required for the treatment of watery eyes, ear canals, areas of affected skin, with artificial feeding of newborns of rabbits. For babies who drink formula or goat's milk, special nozzles for syringes (pipettes) are intended. They imitate maternal udder and they are easier to accustom to this type of feeding. But they often fail, as growing up kids have a snack. To prevent infection by some dangerous diseases, such as ringworm, you must have medical rubber gloves in your arsenal, which are thrown away (burned) after contact with a sick rabbit.

At occurrence of dangerous diseases of massive nature, it will be necessary to make a thorough disinfection of all cells, equipment, adjacent territory. Chlorine is an excellent proven disinfectant. Bleach, or rather its cold solution. But it must be stored in a special sealed container. We have already talked about the laundry detergent “Whiteness”. It is convenient to use and store. Formalin, lysol, carbolic acid, caustic soda, sodium hydroxide solution can also be useful. Creolin in the form of a 3-5% hot (60-70 ° C) water emulsion is widely used to disinfect not only cells, but also entire rabbit-breeding premises. He has a significant drawback - disgusting smell.

Diamond greens or just a little green. Applied externally with fresh post-traumatic and postoperative wounds, abrasions, skin diseases. Apply directly to the area of damage to the skin or mucous membranes. When detecting the initial stage of myxomatosis, lubricate the abundantly occurring lesions on the skin (including the inguinal region). These measures, if not cure the rabbits, then greatly hinder the development of the disease.

Potassium permanganate or simply potassium permanganate - antiseptic, astringent, anti-inflammatory agent dissolved in water and used for washing wounds, burns or ulcers. I will add more - excellent styptic. If, when cutting, for example, your teeth or claws, you cut off the excess, and start to bleed heavily, dip a napkin previously soaked in water or alcohol into dry manganese - and to the place where you are bleeding.

Furacilin - Another disinfectant for treating wounds of different origin and character. For example, use for abrasions, for lesions of the mucous membrane (eyes, genitals), also used for healing after surgical interventions. Furatsilin will help in the treatment of skin abnormalities, manifested in infectious stomatitis and in healing of bedsore inguinal wounds - obesity satellites. Well helps in the treatment of normal, non-infectious rhinitis. It is instilled into the nasal passages with a pipette. If you don’t remember it in time, the common cold can turn into serious complications, such as switching to infectious rhinitis.

Salicylic acid - used in infectious and inflammatory skin diseases. Rabbitheads are widely used to treat ringworm in conjunction with iodine. May be sold as a solution, but I recommend the ointment.

Hydrogen peroxide - used as a rule in the form of a 3% solution for disinfecting any surface, cleaning wounds and rapid blood clotting in case of bleeding. That is, the action is similar to potassium permanganate. As a specific property, I will note the ability to remove (dissolve) ear plugs. And this happens to rabbits.

Iodine - for external use. It has a local anti-inflammatory, analgesic (analgesic) effect, but at the same time annoying. It is not advisable to apply to open wounds, only at the edges. It has the ability to be absorbed into the blood and how to treat wounds from the inside. Iodine treated places for upcoming surgery. As mentioned above, is involved as one of the agents in the treatment of lichen and eczema.

ASD-3For rather, Dorogov’s Antiseptic-Stimulator, Fraction 3, will help in healing with the mix (the lumps appearing on the body in myxomatosis). The drug has a wide range of indications: for the treatment of infected wound-healing wounds, dermatitis, chronic inflammatory skin lesions, trophic ulcers.

Alben, Shustrik remove worms from the body of rabbits. Many rabbit breeders do the feeding immediately after the suction period. There is a theory that baby rabbits are already born with helminths. If you are of a different opinion and do not prevent your animals, then always keep these or similar preparations in the first-aid kit in stock. They are now quite a lot and they are quite effective. Not all are suitable for young animals. I use Shuster. He is just right for them.

Amitrazin plus (Anti-mite) - Anti-parasitic drug of complex action. One of the best drugs for the treatment of demodicosis (tick-borne skin lesions) and otodecosis (auricle damage) of domestic animals. Triple effect: kills ticks, microbes and fungi; the effect of the drug is due to a complex of highly effective active and auxiliary substances. Despite this, it has low toxicity.

Baytril (antibiotic), without a doubt there is a first-aid kit in most rabbit breeders. The shelf life of as much as 3 years, and treats for many ailments. It has a wide range of antibacterial action. Apply mainly with signs of myxomatosis. It also prevents intestinal infections from developing: pasteurellam, salmonella, streptococcus, staphylococcus and other vermin.

New Brovaf or his substitute Colistin - antibiotics designed to combat intestinal infection. Suppresses the growth of coccidia, so often prescribed for coccidiosis. Dysbacterioses and diarrhea, enteritis - we take from the first-aid kit Brovaf. Does not allow to multiply the whole range of harmful bacteria. Rabbit pasteurellosis also treats quite effectively. Apply with the defeat of the respiratory organs of young.

Vacderm, Microderm - depriving vaccines. Additionally, you need to lubricate the affected areas with ointment Antimikotin (Surolan, Fenistil). If there is nothing in the first-aid kit out of the funds listed, lubricate with the izodine every 3-4 hours. Soon you will see a noticeable improvement.

Artificial mixture for baby rabbits, kittens or puppies will help you start feeding babies from the first hours in case of mother's death. Of course, if several females are gone, then you can somehow distribute them into “apartments”. But it is not always possible. If you can not buy such a mixture, you can go out and substitute breast milk for babies, and dilute in greater concentration.

Ichthyol ointment prescribe rabbits for skin diseases - wounds, dermatitis, eczema, burns, frostbite, furunculosis, pyoderma, scabies, ringworm, mastitis. It is valuable in that the pus accumulated in the damaged area is better than others. Now on the basis of ichthyol appeared many other ointments, more expensive, but not more effective than the old, good drug.
