General information

Nest for laying hens with your own hands: drawings

Experienced poultry farmers know that a well-equipped poultry house can significantly increase the egg production of chickens and the quality of eggs. The presence of nests, or special places for laying hens is convenient not only for them, but also for the owner of the birds - he will not have to look for eggs in the corners or in other hard-to-reach places, as well as protect the "harvest" from being eaten by other birds. How to get a much-needed subject for a chicken coop? Today, nests can be purchased at agricultural stores, but if desired, any poultry farmer can build them independently.

General principles of nest construction

The nest is a small container (box, box, or basket) with a pad littered with straw or sawdust. But in fact, not everything is so simple, because in order for the chickens to fly well, the nests must meet a number of requirements.

The nest is a litter box.

  1. To arrange the nests should choose a warm, dry, slightly shaded place where there are no drafts. Do not build nests in damp places or near the entrance to the house, as due to dampness and cold birds can get sick, which will cause deterioration in the quality of eggs. The optimum temperature for a good egg production is 25 degrees, and in winter the thermometer should not fall below 15 degrees.

For nests it is better to choose a slightly shaded place.

The optimal number of nests - one nest for five laying hens

The roof must be made with a slope of less than 45 degrees

Steel Chicken Nest

If the chicken coop is small, then it is fashionable to make nests as an extension.

Before building nests, it is necessary to carefully plan their placement so that the chickens find it convenient to lay eggs, otherwise they will rush to their usual places, and it will be impossible to accustom the layers to a new house.

Types of nests and their features

There are several types of nests, each of which has its own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.

Improvised nest

Eggbed nest

When building nests, it is important to take into account the breed of birds: small nests (25x35x35 cm) are suitable for ordinary layers, and structures of at least 30x40x45 are required for meat-egg crosses.

The nest of scrap materials

If it is necessary to equip a chicken coop as soon as possible, “houses” for layers can be made of any available materials: boxes, boxes, buckets, or any other containers (some poultry farmers even use cut tires and old furniture with compartments or shelves). The main condition that is put forward to the choice of containers - they must be spacious enough so that the hens are comfortable and the surfaces do not have defects, chips or signs of rot. Tanks are installed in the hen house, filled with sawdust or hay and covered with curtains. Typically, such structures are temporary and operated until they are made permanent and more durable.

One of the options nests of improvised means

Ordinary nest

Arrangement of the most common nest of boards, plywood or OSB does not require special knowledge, a lot of time or labor. Constructions can be both individual and multi-tiered - in the second case, a small ladder should be brought to each tier. In addition to the lumber, for the construction of the construction will need the following materials and tools:

Tiered construction for plywood and OSB nests

  • fasteners (nails, screws, screws),
  • emery paper or file
  • timber,
  • screwdriver,
  • hammer,
  • saw (manual or electric).

Important: for the construction of nests can not use fasteners, the length of which exceeds the thickness of the lumber, as its ends can injure layers.

Step 1. Carefully calculate the parameters of future nests, calculate the number of cells and make drawings.

First you need to make a drawing

Step 2. Process the lumber well with sandpaper and a file to remove all sharp corners and roughness.

Wood sanding

Step 3. Cut the details of the structure, if necessary, re-process them.

Cut parts need size

Step 4. Fasten the parts together, and in order to give the resulting box rigidity, secure the timber from the inside corners.

We fasten parts together

Step 5. Secure the entrance to the socket: you can simply leave the front side open, or pound it and cut a small hole. In the lower part of the structure there should be a small threshold about 10 cm high.

The threshold is attached to the bottom of the structure.

Step 6. Retreat from the entrance to the box 10 cm, then fix the horizontal rail there, which will serve as a take-off platform for birds.

Horizontal rake will serve as a take-off platform for birds.

After making nests, they should be carefully checked for sharp corners, protruding ends of nails or roughness.

Eggbed nest

The nest equipped with a container for collecting eggs is a special design that will greatly facilitate the owner to collect eggs, you can equip in two ways: with a double bottom or a special container.

Nest with egg box in the form of a container

In addition to lumber, fasteners and tools (the list is listed above), to construct such a nest, you need a soft non-slip material for upholstering the second floor: it can be felt, linoleum, which is nailed upside down, or any soft fabric. The algorithm works in this case is as follows.

Double Bottom Egg Nest

Step 1. As a template for the construction of the nest, you can take the previous design or an ordinary doghouse. In advance, you should make a drawing on which to cut the parts, and then clean them with a file and emery.

Step 2. The bottom of the nest should be attached under a slope of about 5 degrees relative to the back wall, and between its surface and the lower part there should be a gap into which the egg can easily pass.

Step 3. The main feature of such a nest is the presence of a pallet where eggs will fall (it should be about 10 cm longer than the main structure). The pallet should be upholstered with the selected material and attached to the front of a small strip.

Step 4. Strengthen the pallet in the same way as the bottom of the nest - under a slope of 5 degrees so that the egg laid by the chicken rolls along the bottom and falls into the pallet.

A nest with a container for eggs is made in a similar way, but instead of a gap between the back wall and the bottom in the bottom of the container, you need to cut a hole whose diameter is slightly larger than the diameter of the chicken egg.

Frame Nest

Frame construction is durable and durable, and for its construction will need the same materials as for the usual wooden nest. In this case, the algorithm for performing the work looks like this: first, a frame is piled up from the bars, which is sheathed with plywood. The egg jar is optional.

Metal nest

Making a nest made of iron will require a little more labor and cost than wood, but it will last for many years. To perform the work will need the following tools and materials:

  • galvanized steel,
  • metal pipes (section of 3-5 cm),
  • metal mesh or wire
  • Bulgarian on metal
  • electric drill,
  • screws.

Metal nest with egg box

Step 1. Draw the drawings, make the markup on the steel sheets, cut out the structural elements.

Step 2. The bottom of the nest is cut out of the grid, the second option is the wire, from which you need to weave the corresponding part.

Step 3. Fasten the parts in the following sequence: first the walls and the bottom (at an angle of 10 degrees), then fix the roof.

Step 4. In front of you set up a container for assembling eggs, which is cut from sheets of steel and sheathed in soft material.

"Family" nest

The peculiarity of this design is that it is designed for several chickens - from 2 to 5. The area of the nest can be any, but one layer should be at least 100 cm square. There must be an egg digger, a shelf for collecting litter, a drinking trough and a feeder. For the manufacture of such a "dwelling" will need the following materials and tools:

  • sheets of tin,
  • wooden bars 4x4 cm or metal profile,
  • metal grid,
  • nails or riveting (if a profile is used to build a nest),
  • hacksaw,
  • hammer,
  • pliers,
  • heck for the door, if desired, the wheels for the legs,
  • suitable feeders and drinkers.

If there are no appropriate feeders and drinkers, they will need to be made in advance from sheets of tin. The order of performance of work on the manufacture of "family" nests is as follows.

The feeder can be made from sheets of tin

Step 1. According to the drawn drawings to assemble the frame structure. For greater strength, you need to make additional stiffeners on the walls and the lower part, and the legs, if desired, can be equipped with wheels, which will facilitate cleaning and moving the nest.

Step 2. Attach the bottom and the pallet in the same way as described in the instructions for making nests with the egg-box - the bottom is at an angle of about 10 degrees, at the bottom of the pallet.

Step 3. It is better to make the partitions between the cells of the grid (the use of solid material is not recommended, as it does not provide sufficient ventilation). The mesh is attached with rivets and pliers.

Step 4. At the front of the nests, drinking bowls and feeders are attached, after which the doors are installed. They are made of a grid with large cells so that the inhabitants have unhindered access to food and water, after which they are equipped with heck.

How to attach sockets?

The nests should be attached so that the chickens feel comfortable getting inside and laying eggs there, and it is desirable that the walls of the structures do not touch the walls of the house. There are several options for this, and one of them is for special stands that are attached to the walls of the house. Materials required for work: boards (30x4x2) and screws.

It is important that the walls of the construction with nests do not touch the walls of the house.

Step 1. Consider placing the nests in the room, then attach the board to the wall, which will play the role of the base.

Step 2. Attach a second board with the same dimensions at an angle of 45 degrees, with two strips diverging at the bottom of the overall structure, and the distance between the edges of the planks should not exceed 40 cm.

Step 3. Retreat 45 cm and build a similar design, but the boards in it should converge at the top, not the bottom.

Step 4. Attach the nests with screws to the resulting compartment, check for strength.

Put sawdust or hay in a small layer on the bottom of the nests (the layer of filler should be 10 cm lower than the sides of the pallet). If the nests are equipped with an egg box, you need to make sure that the filler does not prevent the eggs from falling into the lower part.

Sawdust can be used as a filler.

How to teach a hen to the nest?

Usually, in order to teach the chicken to lay eggs in a new nest, it is enough to close it inside for 1-2 nights. If the hen still refuses from the proposed site, you can put an egg in the nest, which was demolished by another hen, or simply a white pebble or a piece of chalk of the corresponding form suitable for the shape. Sometimes chickens are denied access to their favorite place to carry eggs, or pieces of feathers or fluff are placed in new nests. In cases where no measures help, and the hens still lay eggs in another place, you need to check the nests for the presence of parasites (even invisible to the eye insects can disturb birds), as well as mold and dampness.

In order to accustom the chicken to the nest, you can close it inside for 1-2 nights

Nest care

Care for homemade nests is quite simple - for this you should perform a number of activities:

  • nests should be regularly cleaned, changed, the filler as it gets wet and in time to pick up the eggs,
  • when changing the filler, the bottom should be wiped with a disinfectant solution - this procedure should be done at least once a week,
  • To get rid of microorganisms that multiply in poultry houses, nests should be fumigated with special pieces and wipe all the parts with a solution of bleach, then well ventilate the room,
  • once every three months, check the attachment of the sockets to the walls and, if necessary, make current repairs.

Why do chickens crap in nests?

Finally, we should not forget that if chickens do not want to be carried in the nest, it means that there are serious mistakes in the construction or location that need to be corrected.

Basic rules of arrangement

To the bird rushing in the space provided, pay attention to the following points:

  1. The nest should be in a shade, away from sunlight.
  2. The place where the chickens are laying eggs should be dry and warm. To do this, lay straw or sawdust. Farmers with experience in breeding chickens prefer sawdust because the hen is harder to push them out of the nest. Make sure that the layer of flooring is lower by a few centimeters than the side of the recess, otherwise the eggs may roll out.
  3. It is desirable that the bottom of the nest was mesh or had ventilation holes. This will provide airing of the flooring and the “workplace” of the hens will remain dry for a long time.
  4. Do not place the structure on the ground and at the entrance to the house - it is cool and more humid there. A bird can get sick, its performance will decrease.
  5. Fixing the design directly to the wall will reduce the service life of the nest, and in the cold season it will be uncomfortable for laying hens.
  6. When arranging the nest, make sure that there are no chips, do not use long nails because they can easily hurt the chicken.
  7. Count the number of nests based on the number of birds. Arranges 1 place for 5 layers.

Types of nests for layers

If you do not intend to spend time on building a nest with your own hands, purchase a finished product or pick up any suitable container and build a warm secluded place. For this fit old wicker baskets, cardboard boxes and boxes of plastic, wood.

Those who decide to start building nests with their own hands should decide on the type of product.

There are the following types of structures for layers:
