General information

Reproduction hawthorn

Most people are accustomed to hawthorn as an independent tree that reaches up to 7 meters in height and has medicinal, tasty fruits. But hawthorn is also very often used as a hedge, which can be easily cut and a variety of green figurines can be created from hawthorn bushes, they will decorate a private plot. Of course, to create a hedge in the garden will need a sufficiently large number of hawthorn bushes. Buying a lot of bushes in the nursery for many would be costly, but there is a way out of this situation - you can independently reproduce hawthorn. Reproduction of hawthorn - this is a simple task, it is easily propagated by cuttings, if properly made cuttings, you can get a lot of new bushes.

How to choose the cuttings?

Most importantly, you need to choose the right escape, from which cuttings will be cut in the future. Most novice gardeners make a big mistake by choosing shoots that grow upward, but they make bad cuttings. They simply will not be able to form a root system. In order to propagate the hawthorn by the method of grafting, you need to collect shoots from the side branches, which are not actively growing. Also, when cutting cuttings, one feature must be taken into account: if you take one long shoot and cut it into several parts, then cuttings that are closer to the base part will take root. In order for the selected shoots to become good cuttings, there are a number of rules. It is necessary to choose the shoots:

  • Not frozen.
  • Which do not have any damage to the bark.
  • Shoots that have ripened, that is, year. Not desirable, but you can take and biennial.
  • Shoots for grafting should be taken from the middle tier of hawthorn. It is advisable to take those that grow from the southern part of the crown of the tree.
  • When cutting cuttings, it is necessary to take into account the factor that the length of each should be from 10 to 15 centimeters, and the thickness from 7 to 8 millimeters.

How to cut the cuttings?

The success of hawthorn breeding will depend on how to cut the cuttings.

  1. When choosing a greenish, immature process, you need to cut off under a knot or kidney, because the tissues in this place are more protected from various fungal diseases.
  2. When choosing a slightly lignified process (which is undesirable), an incision is made in the center of the internode.

When pruning the cutting, it is also necessary to make an upper cut. It should be done very close to the kidney so that hemp is almost gone. The cut is made with a sharp knife or pruner, pre-sharpened and disinfected. The cut itself must be at an angle of 45 degrees.

Reproduction by layering

For hawthorn seedlings with the help of layering shoots are selected from 1 to 2 years old. They must be placed in a previously dug groove in the ground. The shoot is settled into the groove so that the top of the plant remains on the surface. The laid shoot is fixed in the ground with a staple and lightly sprinkled with light, nourishing soil. It is also necessary to pull over the base of the layer of wire. Gardeners recommend doing this method of breeding in the spring as a last resort at the beginning of summer, this is an opportunity to get a ready seedling in the fall.

In the process of reproduction by layering, the plant in the place of digging must not only be watered, but also fertilized. Ammonium nitrate solution is very well suited for fertilizer. It is necessary to fertilize a plant once a month. Also, as young shoots germinate, it is necessary to gradually pour the soil to strengthen the root system of young plants. The best option would be their mulching with straw, hay or peat. Already by the fall, shoots and hawthorn will take good roots. After that, they must be carefully cut from cuttings and transplanted as an independent plant.

Method of cutting "constriction"

With this method, choose a well-formed shoot that has matured. 3 lower leaves are removed from it and just below the bud, they pull the shoots well with soft wire. Then you need to take a little moss and rinse well with boiling water. After that, add a little bit of garden soil and a couple of drops of root stimulator - it can be heteroauxin. The whole mixture is slightly moistened with water from a spray bottle. Then it is necessary to take a cellophane tape measuring 10 centimeters by 20 centimeters, put moss with a peat mixture on it and wrap an escape in the place of a waist with cellophane.
It should look as if they are making a cast on the arm. As a result, it should turn out that on the shoot in the constriction area a cocoon of peat mixture will turn out. In the place where the constriction was made, there will be a process of breaking the movement of the sap that passes from the leaves to the roots. The plant, in turn, will begin to struggle with constriction, with the result that a small influx of tissue will form at this place. As a result, in 2 months, in the place where the waist will be, roots will form, and in 4 months the entire cocoon of cellophane tape will be riddled with roots. As soon as this happens, you can carefully cut off the escape from the trunk, just below the waist area, remove the cellophane and move the cutting with the roots to re-growing.

As a preventive measure, the plants are sprayed with 1% colloidal sulfur, which improves the appearance and improves the immunity of the young growth. Reproduction hawthorn - a difficult but interesting job. With a serious and thoughtful approach to the process, you can get wonderful young plants that will delight with their aesthetic appearance and useful fruits.
